GEORGE NEWS - The irresistible, glossy 2019 Garden Route SPCA calendar featuring charming artworks by kids from George and surrounds, is the delightful result of an inter-schools art competition organised by SPCA inspector Gerda Reynders and the SPCA's education unit.
The competition, launched in March last year, received over 760 entries embracing the theme "We love all animals". The entrants celebrated South Africa's reptiles, mammals, insects, marine life and even some eight-legged friends!
Judged by local art experts, including Prof Daan Roestorf, retired head of the department of education (school art) at the University of Stellenbosch, the contest unearthed a wealth of talent in George.
We still have 11 months left of 2019 and these local "works of art" are available at R80 each at the SPCA in Ossie Urban Road, George / 044 878 1990, or at the SPCA shop in town.
The SPCA wishes to thank the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava), as well as art experts Ken Smith of the Bella Smith Art and Culture Foundation (BSACF) and Liz Stumke for their evaluation of the artworks.
Prizes were awarded to winners of the various age groups and Scava chairperson, Maura St.John, announced that they had awarded a special accolade to Athene Hage of Glenwood House who painted fish in seemingly moving water.
This project was held in conjunction with Friends of the Museum, Scava and BSACF. The SPCA is very thankful to everyone who was involved. The GR SPCA thanks all the schools that entered, the societies that supported the contest and Lorinda Hakimi of the George Museum, who gave a great deal of assistance to the SPCA.
