GEORGE NEWS - A main sewer line collapsed, apparently as a result of this weekend's heavy rain, and sewage has ended up in the Kat River in the vicinity of Aandblom Avenue.
George municipal communications head Chantèl Edwards said it was brought to their attention last night, 25 October, and they responded immediately.
"It is the main sewer line gravitating to the Eden sewage pump station that collapsed as a result of this weekend’s flooding event," she said.
"A meeting was held on site this morning with internal engineers, contractors and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP). A Section 30A (urgent) application will be submitted to DEADP to enable restoration work within the reaches of the riverbed."
She said in the interim, verbal approval has been obtained from DEADP to proceed with the emergency work. "Temporary and permanent options are in place to remedy the problem."
