GEORGE NEWS - Henry Cock, a runner who is trying to set a world record by running 133 half marathons in 133 days, did his 21,5km in George yesterday morning (Friday 24 September) from Garden Route Dam to the Elvis Brew coffee shop near George Airport.
It was his 79th marathon.
Cock said he is feeling very strong physically at the moment. "Mentally, each day is a bit different, I have good and bad days. It’s lekker though, the support has been good, and it’s great when I have people on my run because they always lift my spirits."
The Johannesburger is challenging himself and at the same time raising awareness that help is available for mental health problems. He also aims to raise at least R4 million for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). More than R700 000 has been collected so far.
Cock started running for the first time last year, after suffering great personal loss and losses in his businesse because of Covid.
"My experience opened my eyes to how prevalent mental health problems are, how few people understand them, and the obstacles people have to face when getting help. Stigma, fear, affordability. They're all very real."
His girlfriend, Diana Richards, has been providing wonderful support and has run 43 of the 79 days with him. "She’s been a big inspiration for me to complete many of the runs and has helped me through a lot of the tougher spots in the journey," says Cock.
He has also received wonderful public support so far. "Every community I’ve gone through I’ve had such incredible people join me and tell me their stories, and I’ve met some wonderfully inspirational people along the way."
Asked how his legs and feet are doing at this stage, he commented good-humouredly: "My legs are kaput and my feet are strong! It’s just about rest and recovery."
