GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality appeals to the residents of George to support their drive-through donation centre and help thousands in need during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
The drive-through donation centre at the Civic Centre in York Street serves as a depot from which the municipal Department of Social Services responsibly distributes supplies to up to 140 home-based soup kitchens in vulnerable communities across the municipal area.
Most of these kitchens serve two meals a day for between 50 (in rural areas) and 200 people (George urban).
Individuals, businesses and organisations can drop off food, hygiene and sanitary products, clothes and blankets for soup kitchens and the homeless at the depot during weekdays (08:00 to 18:00) and over weekends (08:00 to 17:00).
The next time you go out for your essential shopping, if you want to donate, go to the front entrance of the Civic Centre at 71 York Street (opposite Cachalot, between the old Sars building and Victoria Street, look out for the one-way sign), drive up the driveway and stop in front of the building. You will be met by an official, dressed in protective gear, who will receive your donation.
For accountability and logistics, the officials must at least record your phone number on the donation register.
People using online grocery delivery services who want to donate, can make up an online basket and enter the delivery address as Drive-through Centre City Hall, 71 York Street, George.
The types of items that will make a big difference include mealie meal, wheat flour, yeast, milk, sugar, salt, coffee, tea, cooking oil, samp, beans, macaroni, soup powder, stock and fresh or frozen vegetables, meat and fish. Cleaning products include dishwashing liquid, sponges, dishcloths, bleach, all-purpose cleaner and hand wash laundry soap. Hygiene products such as soap and hand cream will be welcome.
Donated items are sanitised and then stored in and distributed from the Banquet Hall, which has been disinfected and managed to conform to strict health and hygiene protocol.
The centre is being managed by George Municipality's Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management department in coordination with the Community and Social Development section.
