GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is expecting a planned protest march by the Thembalethu Community Forum on 17 November to different institutions including their offices.
The service delivery march is scheduled to take place from 08:30 from Thembalethu until 16:00 and there will be traffic disruptions.
They ask motorists to please avoid Nelson Mandela Boulevard, York Street and Courtenay Street during these times and to make use of alternative routes where possible.
The protest march will impact the entire GO GEORGE bus service and most routes.
Passengers need to take note of the following arrangements aimed at minimising disruption of the service:
Delays on all routes must be expected between 10:00 and 16:00, while the following routes will be rerouted for the duration of the march:
All Pacaltsdorp routes
Heading towards town from Pacaltsdorp, the bus will turn right at the circle into Hope Street, left into Lang Street (which becomes Meade Street), right into Market Street, left into Cradock Street, passing the Hub, and right into Courtenay Street, then following the normal route, turning right into Memoriam Street and right into Market Street.
The same route will apply travelling back to Pacaltsdorp.
The afternoon return route of Route 1C (CBD – New Dawn Park) will still turn right into Victoria Street from Cradock Street, but will then join the other Pacaltsdorp routes by turning left into Meade Street instead of York Street on its way back to Pacaltsdorp.
Temporary stops in Lang and Meade Streets on the diverted route:
- c/o Lang and Woodpecker Street, both directions – in line with Skatelab stops
- c/o Union and Meade Street, both directions – in line with Union A stops
- c/o Meade and Fichat Street, both directions – in line with Fichat A stops
- c/o Meade Street and Nelson Mandela Boulevard, both directions – in line with Marthinus stops
- c/o Meade Street and Doneraile Square, both directions – in line with Market stops
Route 53 (Rosemoor) and 53B (Rosemoor Express)
Heading towards town along Courtenay Street, the bus will turn left into Cradock Street, right into Hibernia Street, left into Meade Street, left into Market Street and left into Cradock Street.
The return route will then continue in Cradock Street and turn right into Courtenay Street, following the normal routes from there onwards.
Route 7 (Garden Route Mall – CBD) and 24 (CBD, Loerie Park, Garden Route Mall):
Heading towards town along Courtenay Street, the bus will turn left into Cradock Street and travel to the Transport Hub where it will turn around, travel along Cradock Street back to Courtenay Street, turn right and follow the normal route back to the Mall from there onwards.
Route 13 (City Loop):
Travelling towards town in Davidson Road, the bus will turn left into Caledon Street before it reaches the York circle, right into Stockenström Street, right into Wellington Street and down to the Hub, from where it follows the normal route.
The reverse route will follow the same deviation.
Route 56 (Denneoord – CBD):
Only the reverse route, Route 56R, will be operational during the march. From Denneoord, the bus will travel towards town along Caledon Street, turn left into Stockenström Street, right into Wellington Street and continue to the Hub.
The same route will be followed back to Denneoord.
Route 3 (Blanco - CBD)
From Blanco to the CBD, the route will operate as usual. From the CBD to Blanco, the route will turn left into Cradock Street from the Hub, left into Hibernia Street, and then cross York Street and travel to Blanco as usual along CJ Langenhoven Street.
The entire system might experience delays, but the situation will be closely monitored for the duration of the march on Friday, and any changes to the plan will immediately be communicated on the GO GEORGE Facebook page.
