GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - A picture paints a thousand words. This was perfectly illustrated when a gripping photo of a dog from Lawaaikamp clinging to its owner, Cordelia Nqoqo, caused a social media frenzy this weekend.
"We were dropping off sterilised dogs in the area when I was approached by Cordelia who wanted to surrender her dog, Whiskey, to us as she was financially unable to take care of him," says Garden Route SPCA Head Inspector, Salomé Bruyns.
But Whiskey would have none of it.
"He clung to his owner for dear life. There was only one way to describe it - pure love. Yes, we are an animal welfare, but we also care deeply for the people out there. We see the poverty that some of these people have to endure and we can't just erase those images when we go home at night. I couldn't take Whiskey from his owner as she clearly loves him and he loves her. So I decided to make it my mission to ensure that Whiskey is cared for," says Bruyns.
Whiskey being examined by Dr. Mark Chimes assisted by Jason Jacobs from the GRSPCA.
Bruyns posted the photo and her story on the GRSPCA Facebook page and within a couple of hours the post had reached nearly 10 000 people and had been shared nearly 25 000 times.
With the donations that poured in, the GRSPCA has sufficient food and funds to not only assist Whiskey's owner with pet food and medical bills, but the donations has brought enough relief to assist many other indigent pets who need food, medical care and sterilisation.
"I really didn't expect the reaction we received. Not only kind-hearted people from George, but from across the country reached out to us in an attempt to assist with food, finances and medical treatment for Whiskey.

"This has in turn enabled us to help other animal owners in the community and animals in our kennels. I'm flabbergasted by the support and I want to thank each and every person who has contributed. It really means the world to us," she says.
