GEORGE NEWS - The 58-year-old man from Pacaltsdorp who disappeared in the sea at the Gwaing River Mouth yesterday afternoon, is still missing.
Robert van Helsdingen, NSRI Wilderness duty coxswain, said the NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated at 17:04 on Thursday 13 February after they were alerted that a man had fallen into the sea after slipping on the rocks at the mouth.
A friend he had been fishing with, had to hike quite a distance before he was able to get a cell phone signal.
Despite an extensive search by NSRI rescue swimmers, the sea rescue craft Oscar’s Rescuer, EMS, SAPS and George Fire and Rescue Services, no sign of the man has been found.
A police dive unit is continuing the search and the police have opened an investigation.
Family of the missing man were waiting anxiously at the scene yesterday. Van Helsdingen said the NSRI’s thoughts are with the family and friends of the man in this difficult time.
