GEORGE NEWS - Books contain many words that children are unlikely to encounter in frequently spoken language, and with 78% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa being unable to read for comprehension in any language, cultivating literacy is a priority.
Idinga has been supporting this cause since 2017, when we embarked on a project which seeks to instil the love of reading in children. The Ordinary Magic for Madiba reading project was launched at George Herald's annual sandwich jam on Mandela Day, 18 July 2017.
We believe that reading to young children plays a very important role in the development of literacy.
If a child cannot read properly, they are sure to experience difficulties later in their school career. It not only affects language development, but also subjects such as mathematics.
Idinga has also been publishing a weekly article for some time now, guiding parents to instil a love of reading in their children and help them develop reading skills.
The article, called Rocco's Library, discusses how to treat books with respect as well as why, when and how to read to children.
As part of the Ordinary Magic for Madiba project, Idinga visited Mzoxolo Primary School on Tuesday 16 July - two days before Nelson Mandela's birthday - where the editor, Zolani Sinxo, read stories to Grade R pupils.
