RUGBY NEWS - First-year CUT student and rising rugby talent Chanelle Britz has been selected for the South African Girls U19 Elite Player Development (EPD) Camp, taking place in Cape Town from 7 to 13 December.
Free State Women’s Rugby confirmed Britz is one of four players chosen to represent the province, alongside Joy Ahaotu, Bridgette Vaarland and Owami Mohuli.
Britz is a former Kwagga and hails from George, where her parents still live. She is currently studying in Bloemfontein and giving it her all on the rugby field.
The call-up crowns an exceptional debut year for this arts and design diploma student, who excelled on multiple fronts.
Britz helped CUT secure a silver medal, represented the province at the USSA Women’s Rugby 15s tournament in Pretoria, and later impressed in the USSA Sevens in Stellenbosch, where she delivered several standout performances - including scoring all her team’s tries in one match.
Her rapid rise continued with selection to the U20 Cheetahs Women’s Squad for the SA Rugby Week in Johannesburg. She now awaits confirmation on whether she has cracked the Senior Cheetahs Women’s team, and is currently undergoing intense phase 2 training.
Coach Ash, head coach for both the Free State Women’s Senior and U20 teams, praised the selected players’ commitment throughout the season.
Chanelle’s father, Albert Britz, says she remains humble despite her achievements. “She really didn’t expect the call-up. It’s through hard work, discipline and who she is inside and out,” he said, adding that she made the most meaningful commitment of all two months ago when she gave her heart to the Lord. - Compiled by Michelle Pienaar
