GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Nehawu-affiliated workers of Nelson Mandela University (NMU) this morning, Monday 26 February, were picketing at the George Campus entrance from early on as part of a wages strike.
An official handover of the union's demands to management at the university's main campus in Gqeberha was done on Friday 23 February when they threatened with a full-blown strike should their grievances not be attended to.
The union is demanding a wage increase of 8%.
Local shop steward Anathi Masebeni said negotiations have broken down when their wage demand was not acceded to and the university unilaterally implemented an increase of 6,9%.
He said they are open for further negotiations, but until such time as these resume, the strike will continue.
One of the union's other demands is that the university contribute 60% to workers' medical aid contributions.
Comment from the NMU is being awaited.
