GEROGE NEWS - New developments have emerged in the ongoing case in the George Magistrate's Court involving serious allegations of sexual exploitation, rape and human trafficking.
The second accused, the complainant's mother, appeared in court on Tuesday 28 April.
She was granted bail of R2 000 and released under strict conditions, including that she may not have any contact with her daughter. A protection order is also in place preventing any communication with the complainant.
She is expected to appear in court again alongside the first accused - a local politician and member of the provincial parliament - on Thursday 28 May.
The mother is being represented by Legal Aid.
The first accused cannot be named at this stage, as he has not yet entered a plea. This is not, as previously reported, to protect the identity of the minor involved, but because he may only be named once he has pleaded.
He was granted bail of R15 000 on Tuesday 21 April, after the court had accepted the defence's argument that exceptional circumstances justified his release.
As part of his bail conditions, he is required to remain in Cape Town for the duration of the investigation and may only travel with permission from the investigating officer.
