GEORGE NEWS - In two separate murder incidents in Thembalethu early Monday morning, 4 June, a teenage boy was stabbed to death, allegedly by his friend, and a woman allegedly killed her boyfriend.
The boy (17) died in a street in Zone 8, the informal settlement opposite the Thembalethu Square. It is believed that the two friends were walking in the street when they had an argument. The suspect (18) took out a knife and stabbed his friend in the chest. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 5 June.
In the early hours of Monday morning a 38-year-old man was killed, allegedly by his girlfriend, in Zone 4. The deceased was stabbed multiple times.
Colonel Douw Herbst, Thembalethu station commander, said they are investigating the motive for the murder. The suspect was arrested and appeared in court on Tuesday 5 June.
Herbst, who briefly spoke to the George Herald about these murders, said there has been a slight decrease in murders in Thembalethu compared to statistics for the same time last year.
Call for non-violence
Herbst said the murders that have been taking place recently are not the result of criminal activities but of domestic violence. "We ask the public to please resolve their arguments in a civil manner. They don't have to resort to dangerous weapons.
"We know in most cases of domestic violence, the intention was not to kill the other person, however, when violence is involved in an argument, the unexpected can happen.
"We as police have to play our role and arrest that person, even if the killing was not intended. We ask the public to please try to solve their problems in a non-violent manner," said Herbst.
