GEORGE NEWS - Beleaguered George mayor Melvin Naik beat a hasty retreat at a business stakeholder workshop on Tuesday as soon as he was called to the podium to deliver his scheduled welcoming speech.
Not noticing that Naik, who had arrived late, had taken his seat, the convener jumped to the next speaker, but realised his mistake and quickly called the mayor to the stage.
However, Naik told the George Manager of Local Economic Development, Pedro Oliphant, to carry on with the proceedings and slipped out the door without further ado.
Following the raid on the George Municipality by the Hawks on Monday, the attendees did not expect Naik to put in an appearance at all, but the mayor's quick "in and out" did not go down well.
The George Herald spoke to numerous business leaders in attendance and all agreed Naik should have risen to the occasion.
Some of the top brass were willing to go on record.
Chairman of the AHI Western Cape, Willie Cilliers:
"It is shocking. Politicians are supposed to create a business-friendly environment in which business can flourish. If the mayor felt that he was not up to addressing the workshop with the cloud of suspicion hanging over his head, he should have sent a representative."
Development specialist, Prof Francois Hanekom:
"It is extremely disappointing. The mayor passed up a golden opportunity to address the wider business community, share his vision and put us at ease regarding the council's plans for the future."
Director of Rainbow Place Properties, Fahdiel Manuel:
"I am disappointed that the mayor left without addressing the workshop. As the town father he needs to show leadership in terms of where George has to go.
"He should have had the guts to stand up and look us in the eye. At this stage the Hawks investigation is based on allegations."
President of the Thembalethu Business Chamber, Richard Shumi:
"I think his actions show a lack of courage. He should have spoken to the people as we need some sort of indication as to what is going on. Speculation is rife and as a leader he should be very aware that we now need reassurance."
