GEORGE NEWS - Property related crimes are at the top of the crime list in George. At a recent media briefing, police identified the two top property hot spots.
According to Colonel Michael Taylor, Vispol head at George Police, property related crimes include housebreaking at residential and business premises as well as theft out of motor vehicles. Sector 2 (Courtenay Street, Loerie Park and Denneoord) and Sector 3 (Dormehlsdrift and areas surrounding the industrial area) are identified as the areas that are most targeted when it comes to property related crimes.
Taylor added that there are different hot spots associated with different crimes. "People need to be aware of what happens in their areas in order to identify the crime trend in that specific area," said Taylor.
He added that informal settlements are known for contact crimes like assaults and domestic violence. The hot spots for contact crimes are Golden Valley in Blanco and Touwsranten and Kleinkrantz.
"The contributing factors to crime in these areas are mostly the misuse of alcohol and drugs as well as poverty," said Taylor.
- Do not leave any valuables openly displayed in the car
- Put valuable items like laptops and cameras in the boot
- Make sure that your vehicle is locked properly
- Do not park in a secluded area
- Make sure that doors and windows are closed at home and business
- Always be on the alert
