GEORGE NEWS - The Total Shutdown Woman's March in George will start at 10:00 on Wednesday 1 August at the corner of Market and Cradock streets. Women from all walks of life are invited to join this march against gender-based violence.
Every week there are multiple reports of women who have been brutally murdered, kidnapped, or abused. Women, children, gender non-conforming people (GNC), and the LGBTQIA+ keep dying at the hands of men in South Africa. The organisers say there is no sense of urgency from leaders to find ways in which society can tackle this violence, and something needs to be done.
Women from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay will be carpooling to join the march in George.
Banners and posters are welcome, and all women are encouraged to make and bring along posters to march with.
The march has been approved by law enforcement, and the police and traffic control will be in attendance. No violence will be tolerated. "We will not meet the violence we are standing up against by protesting violently," say the organisers.
The organisers ask that women who attend wear black with a touch of red and refrain from turning the event into a political rally.
The march will end at the Civil Engineering Directorate (Old Town Hall) in York Street around 12:00. George Mayor Melvin Naik will be there to accept a memorandum.
