GEORGE NEWS - The three-month-long summer initiation season in George was successful, according to the chairperson of George Initiation Forum, Mzwandile Gingcana.
He said 203 boys attended initiation school and all returned to the community with no negative reports.
He thanked the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management for providing two water tanks, as well as George Municipality for keeping the tanks at the various sites filled.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport started the Initiation Coordination Programme in 2007 to deal with challenges encountered at the initiations.
In line with the programme, awareness campaigns were held across George before the initiation to educate the boys about what to expect.
Gingcana encouraged parents to contact the forum before sending their boys for initiation and, importantly, to look after their personal needs while they are in the mountains.
