GEORGE NEWS - Imizamo Yethu Secondary School achieved great success at the 2024 Funda Mzansti National Reading Championship, held in George from 23 to 27 September.
The proudly George school won three major awards.
The school claimed first and second place in the Spelling Bee and secured third place in the national reading competition.
Busi Biyela, coordinator and teacher at Imizamo Yethu, expressed her pride in the learners’ accomplishment.
"This is the very first time in nine years participating in this competition that we have won. Our students worked incredibly hard, and these awards are a testament to their dedication and passion for reading," said Biyela.
The school also participated in debates and book reviews, gaining valuable experience.
Their participation was supported by the Western Cape Provincial Department of Sports, Arts and Culture Libraries, which provided hotel accommodation.
George Municipality ensured the success of the event by hosting and maintaining competition venues. The achievements of Imizamo Yethu Secondary have set a high standard for future competitions.
