George Herald Sport Editor Hugo Redelinghuys scooped up the highly sought after title of Caxton Sport Writer of the Year while the George Herald and Mossel Bay Advertiser made it to the national top four in their respective categories.
Redelinghuys, who joined the George Herald as a journalist in August 2012, was promoted to sport editor in March last year and it took him a mere nine months in the sporting arena to snatch the winning ball from the eager hands of some very tough competition. The publications in the Caxton, Urban Community Newspapers and Group Editors stable number 138 titles.
Redelinghuys says the reward came as an absolute, although extremely pleasant, surprise. "Many thanks to all the schools and sport clubs in George. They deserve a lot of credit for this award. Without their input and cooperation I simply would not have been in this position. Thank you also to my colleagues for all their support."
The George Herald was pipped to the post by The Lowvelder, edited by Irma Green, who won the Best Sold Newspaper category, with circulation exceeding 8 000. The George Herald boasts a weekly circulation figure of 19 800 and to be recognised as one of the top four community papers in the country is no small feat.
The annual Group Editors Garden Route and Karoo Holiday Guide, published at the start of the holiday season in December, made it to the top 10 in the Major Advertising Feature category.
The annual Caxton Awards celebrates journalistic, sales, managerial and administrative talent from its local community newspapers. This year, 1 300 entries were received from around the country and over R200 000 was awarded in prize money.
Group Editors Operations Director Nicole Rimbault said it is impressive that Group Edi-tors - one of the few independent community newspaper groups in the country - is able to compete in the national newspaper arena and be so well recognised for its achievements.
