GEORGE NEWS - The new Mayoral Committee (Mayco) of the George Council will be announced this morning Thursday 1 September at the George Council Chambers.
Ten councillors will be appointed by the mayor from among the members of the council to serve on the committee.
The role of the Mayco is to assist the mayor, and function as a local cabinet.
It is in essence an extension of the Office of the Executive Mayor. Each member of the Mayco works on different areas of municipal government and are appointed a specific portfolio.
Since the DA in George is in no coalition with any party, the Mayco consist of only DA members of council. Although the announcement has not yet been made officially (the proceedings start at 10:00), the George Herald learned reliably that the composition of the new Mayco will be as follows:
- Rassie de Villiers - Electrotechnical Services
- Cecil Noble - Community Safety
- Gert Niehaus - Civil and Technical Services
- Mercia Draghoender - Social Services
- Belrina Cornelius - Housing
- Stag Cronjé - Sport and Environmental Affairs
- Marlene Viljoen - Finances
- Edmund Bussack - Rural Areas
- Johann Stander - City Planning, Building Control and Land Affairs
- Gerrit Pretorius - Corporate Services
