The class of 2013 achieved a high pass rate and generally local principals and teachers are satisfied with their learners' performance.
Francois Moll, principal of York High School, was elated with the 100% pass rate. "More important is that 90,7% of the 162 students achieved a Bachelors Pass. Quality is the name of the game and Yorkies are known as excellent students at institutions of higher learning."
Outeniqua High School principal, Christo Vorster announced a 100% pass rate for the matrics of 2013. The school has achieved a 100% pass rate eight times before. Additionally, 83% of the candidates achieved a Bachelor Pass whilst 16% qualified for a Diploma Pass.
PW Botha High School principal Tones Botha said he was extremely pleased with a pass rate of 95%, which was a significant increase from 88% achieved in 2012. Of the 114 matrics at PW Botha, 42,1% achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 41,2% a Diploma Pass and 16,7% a Higher Certificate Pass.
Parkdene High showed a slight improvement with a pass rate of 91,1% compared to 90,2% in 2012. Of the 155 matrics, 13 failed, 38 achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 55 a Diploma Pass and 41 a Higher Certificate Pass.
Pacaltsdorp High School Principal Neville Raubenheimer said their pass rate increased slightly from 92,7% in 2012 to 94,1%. A total of 26,1% matrics achieved a Bachelor's Pass, 58,3% a Diploma Pass and 15,6% a Higher Certificate Pass.
As in the past, George High School kept up their steadfast performance with an 86,5% pass rate, with 332 learners matriculating in 2013. Top student, Moreeda Parker passed with an average of 84 per cent and attained seven distinctions.
Norman Cona, headmaster of Thembalethu High School, said that although the pass percentage remained static at 69,2% compared to 69,5% in 2012, this year 35% of the candidates achieved a Bachelor's Pass compared to 24% last year.
Headmaster Falake Mbotyi, of Imizamo Yethu Secondary School, said this year was a challenge for the school. "Last year the pass rate was 96,6% and this year it dropped to 86,3%, but in 2012 only 88 students wrote matric. This year 262 matriculants wrote the exam. The number of Bachelor Passes dropped from 47,7% in 2012 to 21,8% this year.
