GEORGE NEWS - On Wednesday afternoon 5 May, the Deacon Bistro in Barrie Street, directly opposite the George Hospital, was the scene of a convivial mayoral occasion when George Mayor Leon van Wyk and Deputy Mayor Charlotte Clark were entertained to lunch by the George Hospital Trust (GHT).
Reverend Michiel Burger, the chairman of the trust, said, "The community of George is increasingly becoming aware that we are now governed by a man who holds the principles of integrity, transparency, open timeous communication, and servant leadership close to his heart."
This word of welcome and lunch were followed by a walkabout to show the future site of the Unity Garden where some 500 first responder doctors and nurses can find solace during their very demanding pandemic vocation.
Thereafter the guests were taken to see other centres of interest to the trust, notably the paediatric unit and accommodation for mothers, where so much heroic and vital work has been done in latter years with limited equipment and inadequate hospital space.
At the lunch with the mayor are, clockwise from left: Monica Vaccaro (environmentalist), Michael Vonk (George Hospital CEO and committee member of the GHT), Mayor Leon van Wyk, Brian and Liesel Stokes (local architects), Brenda Vorster (GHT committee member), Beryl Bronkhorst (GHT website developer), Corné Brink (Botanical Garden manager), Deputy Mayor Charlotte Clarke, Blyth Thompson (fundraiser for GHT), Wendy Thompson and Michiel Burger (GHT chairman).
