GEORGE NEWS - While undergoing renovations at the George Arts Theatre, theatre staff were excited to find theatre records dating back to the opening in 1969.
An article from the George Herald from 1969 reads: "A group of dedicated theatre-lovers in this centre has put the Mother City to shame by building, with private funds, a charming 250 seat plush and gold theatre with which to keep the arts flourishing and alive… The George Society of Arts… marked its coming of age by spending R25 000 in converting an old school into a theatre any town would be proud to own."
The George Society of Arts says it is wonderful to be able to look back at the past 48 years with gratitude and pride for those stalwart, dedicated theatre lovers who looked after its heritage and kept the arts alive in George.
In 2013 the relationship between the George Society of Arts and Oakhurst Insurance started with Oakhurst's outstanding sponsorship of the renovations at the theatre. This year the auditorium, dressing rooms and stage are being renovated after these spaces were badly damaged by rain. It was high time, as the previous renovations were done more than 40 years ago.
The society thanks Oakhurst Insurance for this investment into recreating the "plush and gold theatre" started in 1969.
On 27 October the theatre will be hosting a members' evening to celebrate the opening of the revamped theatre. Emile Minnie will entertain the guests with French and Rock and Roll classics.
Non-members can also book a seat at R50 a ticket. See you at the George Arts Theatre!
This wonderful article appeared in the then still Knysna & George Herald in 1969.
