GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality and the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) joined forces to encourage blood donation ahead of Mandela Day, with dozens of donors stepping forward to make a life-saving contribution despite the cold winter weather.

Held at the George Banquet Hall on 16 July, the campaign marked the second consecutive year that the two municipalities have partnered to promote blood donation as part of the 67 Minutes for Mandela Day initiative.

Municipal officials and members of the public rolled up their sleeves in support of the campaign, which aimed to raise awareness of the ongoing need for blood donations while giving back to the community.

A total of 45 donors participated in this year's drive, demonstrating strong community support for the initiative.

George Municipality's HR Officer for Employee Wellness Francois Michaels, said the success of last year's campaign motivated organisers to host it again.

"Donating blood is one of the simplest ways to make a meaningful difference, and every donation has the potential to save lives," he said.

Garden Route District Municipality Assistant HR Manager Calvin Scheepers said the partnership was renewed because the need for blood remains constant.

"Every unit of blood donated has the potential to save lives, and the excellent support we received last year inspired us to repeat the campaign," he said.

To keep donors warm on the chilly winter morning, participants were welcomed with a hot cup of coffee. As part of the South African National Blood Service's Bring-a-Buddy campaign, existing donors who introduced a first-time donor also received a reusable electric hot water bottle.

Michaels expressed appreciation for the turnout, saying the support from donors across various sectors had been encouraging.
