GEORGE NEWS - Gareth Ackerman, former non-executive chairman of Pick n Pay, is giving a talk at the University of the Third Age (U3A) in George on Friday 18 October.
His topic is 'Retail philosophy in a large supermarket chain'.
He will address the broad concept of retail philosophy, understanding the food chain, and the myriad practicalities that influence the operation of a large supermarket chain.
He may even look into his crystal ball to comment on the probable direction of supermarket retailing in the future.
Ackerman has served in various capacities for the Pick n Pay group over the years and is also co-chair of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa.
He sits on the Board of Business Unity South Africa and was a member of the global board of the Young Presidents' Organisation (YPO). He is a member of the board of advisors of UJ Business School and a trustee of WWF SA.
He is an associate fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

U3A’s October programme also includes Armchair Travel on Wednesday the ninth. In this very monthly event, Esther van Rooyen will talk about her 'Discovering Türkiye in just 12 days'.
Van Rooyen loves travelling and in this adventure she travelled with a company who offered her an affordable way of touring in Türkiye.
They had a guided tour of the main attractions and could also hire a guide to accompany them on other trips inside the country. This promises to be a colourful talk and one not to be missed. The talk starts at 10:30.
Falls and healthy ageing
At the general meeting on Wednesday 30 October, Tessa Rhodes will talk about 'Falls and healthy ageing'. Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury fatalities among adults over the age of 65. This talk examines the risk factors for falling and strategies for prevention. Tessa Rhodes is a registered biokineticist with a special interest in older adults.
