The Sandwich Jam tables next to the George Herald printing press were abuzz with chatter, while jam and butter was the order of the day as local businesses, community members, dignitaries and George Herald staff went all out for Madiba and George.
Guests were dressed as their favourite storybook characters, ensuring a spectacle of colour, while Lance du Plessis of Algoa FM provided good vibrations.
Welcoming the guests, Group Editors operations director Nicole Rimbault said Madiba taught us many of life's greatest lessons.
"He taught us to lead from behind, he taught us how to forgive and move forward without resentment, he taught us that the impossible can be achieved, he taught us to invest in our future by investing in our children. He believed that education can change the world." The event was also attended by George Deputy Mayor Charlotte Clarke, George community portfolio councillor Sean Snyman, Lt-Col Lionel Kennedy of the Eden Cluster, Reverend Bonganjalo Mbenenge of the Uniting Reformed Church and early childhood development expert Werna Pretorius.
Love to read
But, the annual Sandwich Jam that helps provide food for the needy is just a small part of the ongoing George Herald Mandela programme. Before the Jam, a video showcasing the Ordinary Magic for Madiba Reading Campaign was screened to muster support for this important campaign.
The campaign focuses on instilling a love of reading and books in children and an appeal was made for the entire community to come on board. Mandela so aptly said, "When we read we are able to travel to many places, meet many people and understand the world." Several sponsorship packages are available for individuals or companies to facilitate involvement at different levels.
