GEORGE NEWS - Three families from Silver Town, Thembalethu, have been left homeless after a fire broke out in one of the structures at about 00:10 on Wednesday morning, 6 November.
The fire razed three informal structures to the ground, destroying everything inside. No injuries were reported.
According to one of the victims, Lihlelethu Joni (19), who was sharing their house with his parents, grandmother and two sisters, the fire seems to have been caused by a burning candle in one of the shacks.
Residents of Silver Town, supported by the ward committee, are banding together to support the 13 victims.
Ward 21 Councillor Siphelo Manxele said it is very sad to lose everything through fire when everyone is approaching the busiest time of the year and called upon the municipality to intervene in this tragedy.
The ward committee is calling on the community to help the victims in any way they can. If you want to donate or give assistance, please contact Manxele on 079 532 9272.
With the festive season around the corner, this is a particularly bad time of the year to lose everything. Photo: Zama Gagu
