GEORGE NEWS - A dog from a farm near Blanco was punished with death by hanging after he allegedly ate two chickens that belonged to his owner's neighbour.
According to Marlene Mennie of Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin), they received a call from a woman in distress who told them about the incident on 17 March.
"She said that the man told some children that he was going to hang the dog and that we'd better hurry. Unfortunately by the time we found the dog it was too late. At first the man denied having done anything to the dog, but just before he ran away from us he admitted to tying up the dog and beating it," she said.
However, Mennie didn't leave it there. She removed the dog and opened a case of animal cruelty at the George police station.
The autopsy report from a local veterinarian shows that the dog definitely died a cruel and drawn-out death.
"The poor animal was first tied down and beaten after which he was hung by his neck," said Mennie. The case was investigated and the man who is allegedly responsible for this monstrous act of cruelty is scheduled to appear in the local Magistrate's Court on 20 May.
