GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route's Own Carpe Musicam! Orchestra will be presenting its Christmas 2020 season of concerts in George at the Blanco Dutch Reformed Church on the evenings of 15 and 16 December, starting at 19:00.
The musical emphasis will be more on the orchestral music than on sing-along carols, but audience members will be allowed to sing along with a few numbers - only if wearing a mask.
Popular local soprano Ninette Smit will feature as soloist in the perennial favourite Oh, Holy Night, as well as a new upbeat version of O Come, All Ye Faithful. She will also lead the audience participation items.
Also on the programme is a Lindsey Stirling hit, Celtic Carol, as well as a stirring arrangement of We Three Kings, with a definite Spanish flavour. This will feature violin duo Cherith Bain and Jean Kotzé as soloists in what one hopes will the first of many similar collaborations.
The fun item Variations on Fa-la-la during which the variations will be played by a brass quintet, will feature George's shortest trumpet player as well as an ex-trumpeter of the very first Womens' Army College Band.
The lead trumpet will be played by Jaylin Cupido, a Georgian currently studying at Stellenbosch. Christo Becker on French horn and Danmir Kellies on trombone will complete the quintet.
A highlight of the show will be the children's group. These 12 young musicians, pupils of various Garden Route music teachers, will play with the orchestra in two items as an ensemble of alto and soprano recorders, violins and flutes.
Norman Carless, the orchestra conductor, says that it will be very special to have so many young musicians leading the way.
Seating for these concerts will be limited to 140 per show and tickets may be pre-booked with Elsabe on 073 857 2952. Entry is R100 for adults and R25 for under-18s.
Remember your masks and see you at the music!
