GEORGE NEWS - George residents can already feel the cold snap predicted for this week by the South African weather office taking effect.

Particularly cold daytime temperatures are expected to dominate in the south-western parts from Wednesday 16 August, spreading to include the central and eastern parts on Thursday.

Light drizzles are predicted for George this afternoon, and from 20:00 tonight, showers are expected. The temperature should reach a maximum of 18°C at 14:00 today. 

The maximum predicted for tomorrow, Wednesday 16 August is a cool 12°C with rain expected all day. 

Rain is also predicted for Thursday with the mercury slightly up at 13°C during the day. 

By Friday, rainfall is expected to clear up. Night temperatures till Friday should drop to 7°C.

On Saturday warmer and sunny weather is expected with a maximum of 20°C and Sunday should be even warmer with a maximum of 23°C expected.

Along much of the southern coastline, periods of strong, gusty winds combined with moderate seas are expected.

Weather SA says some places in the high-lying central and eastern interior are likely to experience daytime temperatures of the order of only 5 to 10 degrees Celsius for up to 3 consecutive days.

Significant snowfall can also be expected over the southern and central Drakensberg. Snowfall could be heavy over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, possibly leading to the closure of the majority of mountain passes in the region as well as associated disruption of traffic flow.
