GEORGE NEWS - The 2026 Catan National League officially got under way in George on Saturday 11 July, giving local board game enthusiasts the opportunity to compete, connect with fellow players and earn a place on the national leaderboard.
Hosted by Eden Toys, the league combines friendly competition with the chance to qualify for the 2026 Catan National Championship.
Players accumulate points based on their performances throughout the league season, and the top 60 competitors nationwide earn invitations to the national finals. The national champion will go on to represent South Africa at the 2027 Catan World Championship.
Those who missed the opening event will still have three opportunities to participate in George. The upcoming league dates are on Saturday 25 July, Saturday 8 August and Saturday 29 August.
All events will take place at Bain's Bench Eatery and Bar from 10:00 to 15:00. Entry costs R50 per player.
Each event consists of three rounds, and the scores are recorded on a national leaderboard that is regularly updated. Players from participating stores across South Africa compete for ranking points throughout the season. Eden Toys serves as George's official Catan National League venue.
The current Catan League manager, Jacques van Zyl, a former national Catan champion, said the league is designed to introduce new players to the game while providing experienced competitors a pathway to national and international competition.
Van Zyl represented South Africa at the Catan World Championship in Germany last year and regularly teaches newcomers to play the game. He also hosts social tournaments and demonstrates Catan annually at Comic Con Cape Town.
