GEORGE NEWS - A burglar was shot and killed at a house in Bodorp in the early hours of this morning, Friday 6 April.
Marcelle Schröder, M Sec Security George manager, says one of their security guards responded to a panic button alert at 02:01 and arrived at the house at 02:08 this morning.
The house has a 3m perimeter fence and the homeowner, a woman, opened the gate to allow the guard inside.
Schröder says the guard discovered an open window at the back of the house and he saw cellphones and tablets stacked on the inside of the window.
“The guard reported that all of a sudden, a man who was hiding in the dark garden, attacked him with a thick wooden pole, hitting him across the chest. The guard fell onto his back and warned the attacker to stand still as he (the guard) was armed. The burglar continued his attack and the guard fired a warning shot.”
Even this did not deter the assailant and the guard fired again – this time the bullet hit the attacker in the head.
Shortly afterwards, backup arrived and the police and an ambulance were called to the scene.
The man was declared dead on the scene.
Schröder says both the guard and the home owner are severely traumatised. “As per normal procedure, our guard was arrested, questioned and released this morning. We are sending him for counselling.”
The police are investigating the incident.
