GEORGE NEWS - The municipality's closed-circuit television (CCTV) control room is currently undergoing extensions.
There are more than 500 cameras across the city that feed into the control room and are monitored to protect municipal property and identify criminal activities and/or situations that may lead to unlawful actions.
During a recent visit, George Mayor Leon van Wyk witnessed the usefulness of the system. While he was in the control room, suspicious activity was identified alongside a road.
Municipal law enforcement officers and the police were contacted to investigate and a suspect was subsequently arrested for alleged attempt of cable theft.
"As was clearly illustrated during my visit, the need for ongoing expansion of the CCTV network is important and continuous investment into such technology essential," said Van Wyk.
