GEORGE NEWS - A female correctional service warden, Nontle Gomo (42) and ANC Regional Secretary, Major Sokopo (44), have laid charges of assault against each other following an altercation at Correctional Services in George.
The incident happened on Tuesday 9 October on the grounds of the prison in front of the office of the Southern Cape Commissioner.
Sgt Michael Opperman, the George communications officer, confirmed the charges.
According to an eyewitness an argument broke out between the two when they passed each other at the Correctional Services facility at around 11:00. The argument allegedly turned violent and included the throwing of some hard-boiled eggs.
Correctional officials intervened and separated the two.
Following the scuffle, both Gomo and Sokopo laid charges at the George police station.
Johan Pienaar of the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that one of their employees was involved in an incident on the prison grounds.
"Ms Gomo has opened a case with the police and the incident will also be investigated by the department of correctional services."
