GEORGE NEWS - George police are investigating cases of possession of suspected stolen property and fraud against a man who was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal diesel from a fuel station in George in the early hours of Saturday morning, 2 May.
The suspect, Samuel Draai (34), appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Monday 4 May.
Shortly after the incident Draai was arrested in Hope Street by members of Greystorm Tactical and local police who were nearby at the time. According to the general manager of Greystorm Tactical, Francois van der Merwe, the suspect drove off in an Isuzu bakkie after filling the vehicle and five 20-litre containers with diesel, without paying.
It is believed that the card he gave to the fuel attendant was a stolen card that had been cancelled. "Our unit gave chase after the Isuzu and successfully made the arrest in Hope Street with the assistance of police who were in the area," said Van der Merwe.
On Tuesday morning Southern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, said that a postponement date still had to be verified as they were awaiting the docket from court. Draai remains in custody.
The front and back number plates of the vehicle didn't match.
The Isuzu bakkie with containers full of diesel was stopped in Hope Street after the driver allegedly tried to take the fuel from a nearby fuel station without paying for it.
