GEORGE NEWS - National spokesperson of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DTPW), Thami Mchunu, replied last Thursday to George Herald's enquiry about a lack of visible security at the historic house in Davidson Street behind George Hospital.
The article (Security at house of sin questioned, p. 6, 26 August) voiced the concern of nearby residents regarding the security at the property.
The house is notorious for allegedly being used as a drug house in the past and has been vandalised by vagrants over the years.
Mchunu said the property is being guarded 24/7 by a security company, Vhakula Trading and Projects Pty (Ltd).
"The vagrants were stopped from entering the property," he said. "However, there's only one old couple occupying the outside building. The department is taking the necessary steps to have them evicted."
Mchunu also confirmed that a formal request to acquire the property has been received from the Western Cape DTPW. "The department's internal processes are still unfolding in this regard."
