GEORGE NEWS - A cow and two calves were killed when they were hit by a police vehicle in PW Botha Boulevard in the George industrial area at about 19:00 on Sunday evening, 7 July.
The accident happened while the cattle were crossing the road in the area between the bridge and the Total garage.
When the Garden Route SPCA arrived on the scene, two of the cattle were already dead and the other had to be euthanised due to the severity of its injuries.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the police officers were travelling along PW Botha Boulevard when cattle crossed the road.
"They sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital by ambulance. Both were later discharged and are currently recovering at home," he said.
In a second incident in the same area the following morning, just after 07:00, another cow was hit by a vehicle.
The cow was part of a herd of four cattle roaming the area. The animal did not sustain any serious injuries and the herd was impounded by George Law Enforcement and taken to the SPCA.
