GEORGE NEWS - A young man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the George Regional Court late last year for robbery with aggravated circumstances and attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances of a cellular phone.
According to Captain Dumile Gwavu, Thembalethu police communications officer, Abongile Magatya (25) stabbed and robbed a woman of her cellphone on 30 October 2017 in Tabata Street in Thembalethu.
Gwavu said a scuffle ensued when the accused tried to rob the woman of her cellphone, during which he stabbed her, and eventually took the phone.
After being arrested Magatya was found guilty and sentenced to seven years for robbery with aggravated circumstances and three years for attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances of a cellular phone.
Colonel Douw Herbst, Thembalethu police station commander, applauded the investigating officer, WO Samuel Gawie of the Thembalethu detectives, who investigated the case that led to the conviction of Magatya. He also thanked the community for their assistance with the investigations.
