GEORGE NEWS - If plunging into the icy Atlantic Ocean in the middle of winter sounds like fun, Victoria Bay is the place to be on Saturday 18 July when the annual Ysbeer/Polar Bear Winter Swim returns to the Garden Route.
Brave swimmers from across the region will gather at the popular beach for a midday dash into the freezing surf. The event forms part of a nationwide series for charity.
Victoria Bay is one of six venues hosting the 2026 Winter Swim Series, which stretches across three provinces. Whether seasoned ice swimmers or first-time participants, the entrants will test themselves against the cold while supporting worthy causes.
The event in Victoria Bay is followed by one at Santos Beach in Mossel Bay on 19 July, before concluding with the inaugural Great Brak Swim on 25 July.
All swims start at 12:00.
The funds raised during the 2026 series will support Search and Rescue South Africa (Sarza) and Johenco, Sutherland's old age home.
Local organisers emphasise that safety remains a priority, with structured swim times, marshals and support teams at every venue.
