GEORGE NEWS - Mama Nomsa Zimema (54) from Thembalethu, has been turning her love for sewing into both a livelihood and a mission for her community.
For the past nine years, she has honed her craft at home and, along the way, taught her husband Steven and son Gavin to help with hemming machines and fine trims.
Passionate about quality, Mama Nomsa prefers Da Gama cloths and only the finest Shwe-Shwe fabrics. Her skills are set to grow even further as she prepares to attend her first professional sewing course with Bernina, aiming to take her work to a truly professional level.
Her ultimate dream is to train young people in sewing, empowering herself and then passing those skills on to others in her community.
Mama Nomsa is also an active member of the Clover Mama Afrika project, where she learns, grows, and shares her knowledge with others. Recently, she took part in a Pies and Pastries workshop in Gauteng, expanding her skills in baking.
She looks forward to taking her new skills home and using them to produce pastries for elderly community members who spend hours waiting in clinic queues.
Through her craft, Mama Nomsa is not just creating beautiful garments and delicious treats; she’s weaving a stronger, more empowered community.
