GEORGE NEWS - Despite delays caused by the underperformance of the initial contractor and the unpredictable George weather, the new bridge over the Maalgate River, about 15km out on the R102, has finally been completed, and it's looking impressive.
The official opening took place at the bridge last Friday, 24 October, with ministerial attendance, role players from the engineering industry and local councillors.
André Barnard, a nearby farmer, delivered a heartfelt message of thanks, saying the widening of the bridge will make a significant difference for the farming community and for cyclists who use the road daily.
Commenting on the project's challenges, Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers said the team faced each setback and pulled through despite the odds against them. The total cost of the project amounts to R54.9m.

Jandré Bakker, director of operational support, said the project was designed in such a way that it matches the aesthetics of the original bridge, which was constructed in 1938. "The existing bridge is a three-span reinforced concrete arch with spandrel walls," said Bakker.
"The scope of work included realigning, rehabilitating and resurfacing a portion of the R102 to accom-modate the new centreline of the bridge. Existing concretelined side drains were rebuilt, and new subsoil drains were installed. Cofferdams around piers and abutments were constructed to enable the widening."
Other works included excavating down to the rock for the pier and abutment foundations, reinforcing and casting the concrete, relocating existing services in ducts across the bridge, moving guardrails and installing new ones, as well as installing road signs and road markings after the surfacing.
What a beauty!
