The plan was inspired by Rodney and Pamela van Wyk, whose family have lived in the George area for the past 58 years, and whose appreciation of winemaking has been passed on to their family.
Sherwin van Wyk, their second son, is a qualified winemaker and has worked for Groot Constantia, Boland Cellars and Monis in Paarl. Rudger, their youngest son, is currently obtaining his qualification as winemaker through the University of Stellenbosch (oldest brother Harlan is a dietician).
From this appreciation, the Van Wykshof Wine label was launched.
Sherwin says "we designed the label as a family, honouring the Coat of Arms of our family and the Outeniqua Mountain."
Their red wine, named the Rodney Darryl Red after their dad, is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Pinotage and Merlot, and their P D White wine, named after mom Pamela, consists of Sauvignon blanc and Chenin blanc.
The Van Wyk parents believe that initiating a label for the family, the first of its kind in the area, will contribute to the growing economy of George and also expose more people in the Southern Cape to the art of making wine.
