GEORGE NEWS - A number of young men recently completed the Big Brothers mentoring programme in Thembalethu which seeks to assist young men to make better choices in life.
Since its inception last year, the programme has worked toward ending substance abuse and involvement in gang-related activities among young people.
This initiative was started by a group of young married men who decided to start a mentoring programme for young people in Thembalethu, particularly youths in high school. The mentoring programme is run at Imizamo Yethu Secondary School, where they meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school.
They use oral and literary means (debate, public speaking, poetry etc), Futsal (indoor soccer), dance, drama and logic games (puzzles, chess and draughts) to interact with the learners.
The young people graduated during the official launch of Big Brothers held earlier this month at the Thembalethu Community Hall. The event was attended by various stakeholders including the police, teachers and other community role players.
Graduates.
