GEORGE NEWS - Case Rijsdijk will be addressing the intriguing story of the Star of Bethlehem when he presents his Christmas lecture to U3A at Emmaüs at 10:30 on Wednesday 22 November.
The Star of Bethlehem has baffled astronomers, historians, and theologians for the past two millennia. But what was the star?
What facts can we access today that might lead to some sort of answer?
Rijsdijk will briefly recap our perceptions of the Christmas story, life at the time of Christ's birth, some of the historical records that exist, a few theories about what the star was and finally, using some recent discoveries, modern technology and astronomical data tied into biblical and existing historical records, he will try and produce a rational explanation or theory of what the star was, or could have been.
"Hopefully this will generate some deeper thinking about the Star of Bethlehem, but no matter what rational answer anyone produces, Christmas will still be what Christmas is today," says Rijsdijk.
