GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued a red alert about veld fire conditions starting today until 18:00 on Wednesday 28 October in the Oudtshoorn, Kannaland, Prince Albert, Beaufort West, Hantam, Khâi-Ma and Laingsburg municipal districts.
The warning refers to hot temperatures, moderate to strong winds and low humidity which might result in the development of veld/bush fires.
“Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life. All personnel and equipment should be removed from the field. Fire teams, labour and equipment are to be placed on full standby. At the first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken in order to bring the fire under control in the shortest possible time,” the warning states.
