GEORGE NEWS - Chief Fire Officer and Emergency Services for George, Neels Barnard, confirmed that Gwaiing beach is currently still closed for swimming.
The beach had to be closed for swimming on Tuesday 7 December due to large pieces of debris in the river mouth after Monday’s heavy rainfall.
He said lifeguards are stationed at the beach, but for the safety of the public, no swimming will be allowed at this stage.
Large pieces of debris that are partly buried under the sand can cause serious injury to bathers. In addition, the water is very deep in places.
The municipality will keep the public informed of further developments.
