Update
GEORGE NEWS - Essential workers of the George Municipality are demanding R20 000 per person for a period of 9 months as danger payment for working during Covid-19 lockdown.
Several divisions are requesting the payment which will amount to R64 million in total, according to municipal communications chief Chantel Edwards-Klose.
She confirmed that the workers' strike yesterday (Friday 4 June), which affected refuse removal, was unprotected. Their demand remains under negotiation with the unions.
"Given the financial impact of Covid-19, coupled with the economic crisis within the broader country, George Municipality is unable to meet such a demand. Due process has not been followed with the unprotected strike which is illegal and it will be dealt with accordingly," said Edwards-Klose.
She said the allegation made by the workers that funds for the purpose of danger payment has been received from National Government via Provincial Government is not true.
