GEORGE NEWS - Ulysses Garden Route (UGR) continued their assistance to the less fortunate with three handovers on 15 and 18 April. The chapter's members hail from Plettenberg Bay right through to Stilbaai.
The Crags Feeding Scheme (CFS) outside Plettenberg Bay, run by Pastor Allan Jubber and his wife Selena, was the first recipient. UGR paid for a line of credit at a local store where the Jubbers can collect critically needed supplies whenever necessary.
The Jubbers, angels of mercy to many, have been operating the feeding scheme for over 15 years on a zero budget. The Ulysses contribution was therefore highly valued. The Jubbers' charity never turns a battered soul away - from homeless children to adults who don't have a roof over their heads. Their feeding scheme daily provides sustenance for many - sometimes more than 100 people.
The local go-between from UGR, Frank Beale, is also involved in the feeding scheme and coordinates the needs of the CFS with Ulysses.
Beale and his family lost everything in the Knysna fires last year and testified about what the Jubbers meant to them and many other fire victims by distributing food, clothing parcels and hot soup to the victims.
Staff and residents at Kenani in Heiderand were very happy to receive the donation.
The convoy of bikers then moved on to Nolene's Soup Kitchen in Hornlee. Nolene Calvert has been operating the soup kitchen for 17 years.
Having survived a stroke and two heart attacks, she heeded the calling to devote her life, with the help of her family, to the local community, many of whom live way below the breadline.
She provides food for 114 children every day, prepared and dispensed from a single shipping container in her yard.
There was hardly a dry eye when she told the assembled bikers of the long and difficult road behind her. Her stock was stolen on several occasions and she often had only dry bread to give the children. She received a new microwave and a considerable stock of urgently needed groceries, which was handed to her by local UGR coordinators Mike Wilbraham and Lara Engelbrecht.
The Crags Feeding Scheme has been providing food to the needy for more than 15 years.
The third handover took place at ACVV Kenani in Heiderand, where once again a large amount of groceries and other essentials were given to staff and residents.
"We will continue our support of deserving charities such as Crags, Nolenes and Kenani," says UGR president Eddie Boshoff.
"The Whale Rally is our principal source of funding and will once again be held at ATKV Hartenbos on 15 to 17 June. This is the 14th Whale Rally to be held and the event has grown from somewhat humble beginnings and an attendance of just 100 bikers, to one of the premier events on the national rally circuit, with a following of thousands from all over Southern Africa."
