GEORGE NEWS - Two people died and others sustained various serious injuries on roads in the George area this week.
On Sunday 1 December two people died, one was critically injured and six others were seriously injured after the driver of an Opel Corsa bakkie allegedly lost control of his vehicle on the Hoekwil road near Wilderness.
The deceased, along with some of the other injured passengers, was sitting on the back of the bakkie.
According to a member of the community who does not want to be named, it seemed as if the bakkie was driving up the Serpentine Pass when it missed a corner, over-corrected and hit the barrier on the side of the road.
"There were quite a few people in the back of the Corsa. It lost two tyres and allegedly came to a halt in the original lane," she said.
George police communications officer, Capt Nolonwabo Tshengu, said that the bakkie was the only vehicle involved in the accident. "Two people died on the scene, six were injured and one was critically injured and airlifted to hospital," she said.

Man loses leg after accident in Outeniqua Pass
On Monday 2 December a motorcyclist from Mossel Bay's leg had to be amputated after an accident in the Outeniqua Pass.
According to information received by the George Herald, the motorcyclist was driving towards George when he collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.
The truck was apparently partially in the motorcyclist's lane on a bend when the accident occurred. The truck overturned and the driver sustained minor injuries.
According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, their paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene shortly after 11:00 to find the truck lying on its side in the road while the motorbike was found a short distance away. "The motorcyclist was found lying next to his bike. Medics assessed the man and found that he had sustained serious injuries to one leg, leaving him in a critical condition. He was rushed to hospital by ER24 paramedics," he said.
Later that day his right leg was amputated between the knee and hip. At the time of going to print, he was in a stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
