GEORGE NEWS - It was third time lucky on Saturday 10 April for Sean Snyman (57), a councillor of the George Municipality, when he was successful in his attempt to reach the summit of George Peak.
Last year in September a strong wind forced him and other hikers to abandon their attempt. He was planning to try again in January this year, but could not do it because of health reasons.
Early on Saturday morning he was ready for his third attempt. With him was Petra Herrington and Renee Jurgens. It was a perfect morning to walk and they started at 06:30. They reached the summit in just under five hours.
Snyman told George Herald on Monday the hike was one of the most challenging things he has ever done. If it wasn't for Herrington and Jurgens who accompanied him, he wouldn't have made it. He wanted to do it as a challenge to himself and as a person with as disability. Snyman also wanted to summit in honour of his son, Shawn, who died in 2004.

According to Snyman coming down was even more challenging than going up. "I fell six times on the way down."
He said it is symbolic that he achieved his goal in April. "It is the 13th anniversary of my motor vehicle accident on 1 April 2008 in which I lost the use of my right arm."
