GEORGE NEWS - The police were called out after taxis blocked parts of Cradock and Hibernia streets shortly after 07:00 yesterday morning,15 December. The municipality issued a statement urging motorists to avoid Cradock Street.
Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies said members of the Public Order Policing Unit (Pops) were called to help and Cradock Street was reopened just before 08:00.
The members of Pops remained on the scene to monitor the situation. Taxi owners, the police and traffic started negotiations after the incident.
The police are investigating a case of public violence. No arrests were made at the scene and no incidents of violence occurred.
It appears that the impounding of some taxis was mainly the reason for the blockade.
